Few foods make a great combination, like bacon and eggs for breakfast, burger and fries for lunch or spaghetti and meatballs for dinner. Add one more – chicken and waffles -a culinary marriage made in heaven. We inherited our chicken and waffles recipe from Gussie, a Georgia native and the owner of the Well’s Restaurant in Harlem, New York back in the 1930s. When Gussie retired she passed her blend of southern style cooking with east coast sophistication to her youngest granddaughter, Michele Wilson, who manages and serves as Executive Chef at this San Francisco version of her restaurant.
Our menu is an eyeful and a real feast. But yes, our specialty is buttermilk fried chicken served with a choice of signature sweet potato, banana pecan, vegan buckwheat, or cornmeal waffles. We’re serving food all day, so come by and indulge your taste buds with a balanced sweet and salty meal!

Whoever said that family cooking has gone out of style in restaurants has not been at Gussie’s. I used to reminisce our cozy family get-togethers back in Texas as a kid, savoring the chicken recipes only my mom could make. To a large extent, Gussie’s Southern fried chicken and cornmeal waffles remind me of those days. Forget about McDonald’s quarter pounders, their succulent turkey and real Angus burgers are more fulfilling, healthier and a better value in my opinion.
